(Remember to give files plenty of time to load.)

Recent installation of Internet Explorer's recent version has difficulty loading some PDF files. These will load part way, then the Acrobat Reader screen will go black. If this happens, using a different browser such as FireFox should correct the problem until Micorsoft or Adobe does. (Google's Chrome browser works, but ignores the page number and goes to page one.)

There are a number of approaches to this problem, described on adobe.com at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/328/328233.html. (Note that Acrobat and Acrobat Reader are 32-bit applications.) One such approach for using new versions of Internet Explorer is to open Acrobat Reader, on the Edit menu, select Preferences, then select Internet on the left...and on the right deselect "Display PDF in Browser Using...", click OK and Close Reader. Now Internet Explorer and other browsers will use another method of opening PDF files by opening Reader, and loading the online PDF into Reader outside of the browser. This method ignores the page number and opens at page one. In Internet Explorer, embedded PDFs will also be forced to open in a separate Reader window.

Adobe Acrobat Reader (or similar PDF file reader) is required to view the archived issues. The reader also allows you to download and print. A free reader is available at:

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS

Questions? Suggestions? eMail Doug at couchdouglas@aol.com

For folks who prefer the simpler method of having these files on CD, watch the AVP-USA store under "Other Workshop Aids" for a new CD with these files already setup...or watch for it on the Order Form in future issues of the Transformer.

Create a new folder (suggested name = "archive").

After downloading the main archive digest file, "1985-2010.pdf" (above), and the loader file, "archive-digest-toc-DL.htm, also download the background image file, "partly_cloudy.jpg" and the "transformer_logo.gif" file. (Right-click preceding links and select "Save target as...") Place all files in your new archive folder together.

Double-clicking "archive-digest-toc-DL.htm" will load this Table of Contents file with its background and logo images, and make 1985-2010.pdf archive contents available to the links in this Table of Contents page. The links on this page allow you to access both issue and article titles directly. However, once the archive PDF file is open, you may navigate page-by-page or use the Bookmarks to go directly to each issue. Article "easy access" is only from this file's links. Also once the archive PDF file is open, you may use the Search feature (binoculars button) to search for any word or phrase throughout all issues at once.

END OF MAIN INSTRUCTIONS

OPTION: To display the Table of Contents page with thumbnail images for each issue:

  • Create a folder named "images" inside your new archive folder
  • Download "thumbnails.zip" to the "images" folder
  • Extract all files from the zip file into the "images" folder
  • Also included in this zip file is the solution to the crossword puzzle for Fall 2003.
  • Also included is an AVP icon file. (additional option)
    • If you create a desktop shortcut (below), you can right-click the shortcut, select the "Change Icon" button, and enter the path to the AVP icon file located in the "images" folder.
    • To determine the path to the AVP icon, navigate to the images folder, right-click on the icon file, and select "Properties". On the "General" tab in "Properties", find the "Location" and copy that location. Paste the location into the field for "Change Icon" in the shortcut icon change dialog. After the path is pasted, at the right end of the path, type a forward slash and the filename (/avpusa_logo_i.ico). Close the icon file properties dialog, leaving the shortcut properties open. In the shortcut properties' icon change dialog, click OK. Then click OK in the main shortcut properties dialog.
Refresh the browser if the Table of Contents is already open. Your Table of Contents file should now display thumbnail images for each issue in the listing.

OPTION: To create a shortcut on your desktop (Windows PCs):

  • Navigate to your new archive folder on your hard drive
  • Right-click on the "archive-digest-toc-DL.htm" file
  • Select "Copy"
  • Navigate to (Show) your desktop
  • Right-click on your desktop and select "Paste Shortcut"
  • Rename the shortcut to a shorter name as desired
    • (right-click shortcut, select "Rename")
  • If desired, you can drag this shortcut to your Quick Launch toolbar
  • Note: When this file is open in your browser, you can Add to Favorites also
